I've been wondering about the history of this car since I got it and wanted to find out as much info and history as possible, it turns out it's alot harder than I thought. Finding the history on a car here in Sweden is easy since a car has the same registration number it's whole life and records are easy to get. Since this car spent most of it's life in the US (1963-2006) I have no idea how to find out anything about it. I do have the last title so I know a little bit about the last few years it was in the US. Here's what I know so far (and what I'd like to find out):
* It was built at the GM Assembley Plant in Janesville, WI.
* Final assembley date was May 11th, 1963 (a Saturday).
* Originaly it was light blue with matching interior and white convertible top.
* Front and rear bench seats, gear lever on steeringcolumn. (non-SS car)
* It had a V8 but there is no way of knowing which one, either a 283, 327 or a 409, my guess is 283 or 327. It had a 307 V8 from a Chevelle when it came to Sweden.
* 2-speed powerglide auto.
* In 2002 (last title) it was bought by C.J in Lisbon, ND and it stood in their field until sometime early 2006.
* I believe C.J and S.J replaced all the body panels, mainly because finding original parts here is impossible and shipping them seperatly is insanly expencive.
* It was standing in one of two fields owned by a father (C.J) and son (S.J) and they have a nice little collection of classic cars, about 2000 or so. Here's a video from a few years ago driving thru the fields:
The fields in Lisbon, ND
* The guy I bought it from bought it from C.J in early 2006 and had it shipped to Sweden.
* The car arrived and was pre-registrered in Sweden on September 26th, 2006.
* I bought it 7 months later on April 26th, 2007.
What I'd like to find out is the history before 2002:
* Was it ordered or regular production?
* How many owners?
* Any interesting stories?
* How did it end up in the condition it was, in a field?
If anyone knows if it's possible to find out any info on this car in the US and where to turn/who to talk to I would appreciate it alot. I know that many years ago you could contact the DMW in the last state it was registrerd in and they could look up the VIN and see previous owners for that state and then you could track it backwards but as far as I know the laws changed and that kind of information became private and the DMW won't share it, is this true? What are the odds that the DMV in ND would give me any info, like number of owners or which states it's been registrered in? Since I live on the other side of the planet it's pretty hard to walk in to the DMW and ask myself, if I could I would.
