I'm not sure I'm following you. 98-99 OBS bell housing... you'd have to swap transmission, right?

Can you just drill/tap your 04 Bell housing for the rods?

I could of sworn I saw somewhere that the poly transmission mounts cause issues like this... don't recall where though.
The 98-99 is a 2 piece trans, the bellhousing could be swapped, but it is slightly smaller as it is designed for a 298mm torque converter, the 04 torque converter is 300mm not much of a difference but the bellhousing size is noticeable different.

Couldn't tap the 04 bellhousing as it sits flush against the engine, the 98-99 bellhousing does have a couple of ears/holes to fit the brace rods. Here is picture (not the best) showing the rod connected.

Only the engine has polyurethane mounts, the trans mount is GM OEM, this could however be the problem, not ruling it out

You can't mix poly and rubber mounts. That's causes a lot of issues. With twisting, cracking, and breaking stuff

I would think it's because they have different durometer coefficients (probably not the same terminology, but that is actually a technical term for structural bearing pads.)

Maybe during shock absorption one of the mounts takes more share of the loads, which leads to some sort of eccentric or torsional stresses.

Again, not certain, but that's my guess.
