Lot's of old timers I know would choose a 292 stick all day long over a factory 350 auto for towing. Certainly over a 305.

Same old timers that think towing at 32mph is normal and EFI is the devil. My 350 can tow at interstate speeds in the dead of summer at altitude with the AC cranked. Times change and not always for the worse.

I'm not talking about a 350 Vortec, I'm talking the smog era air pump days pre fuel injection.
My stock Q-Jet 305/700r4/3.08 G-van at 200K with headers, air pumps (had 2 of them) deleted and exhaust ran better than the new GM Crate 350 TBI I replaced it with. The 305 had power from 1,500-5,500 the TBI 350 fell on its face at 4,000 in stock form. 305 made 181 rwhp/268 rwtq. The 350 made 178 rwhp and 260 rwtq.

Your 305 is far from stock....

That one wasn't. Stock long block with thorley tri-yheaders into the stock catless dual exhaust and a couple of air pumps removed. The 350 TBI had the same headers/exhaust and accessories transfered over.. At the time it had a stock 1992 G20 van intake, TBI unit and ECM in it. The stock 305 had flat top pistons, 14022601 heads, .390/.410 lift cam, a factory aluminum intake, factory Q-Jet and came from GM with factory shorty headers which I later swapped for the Thorleys. That 305 also had factory 4 bolt mains, factory forged crank and factory "X" rods. The stock 700r4 shifted at 5,500 rpm when you had the throttle pinned to the floor.

Being it was built in July of 1982 as an 83 model, one has to wonder if GM slipped some 305 engines built as HO spec into vans as a production test. Similar to GMs L33 approach to using the 243/799 head castings on all Gen4 4.8/5.3s. I have actually seen several Canadian built 305 vans of the same time period with the same engine build. GM slapped a crude knock sensor setup onto them as well with an ESC module under the seat using a standard HEI distributor with a 5 pin module. Same ESC controller setup as the 3.8 carb turbo buicks and 301 turbo pontiacs. The whole wiring setup on that was even a piggy back. GM literally built the ESC harness and plugged it in as an add on.

You could do it with an Atlas I6 out of a Trailblazer. Not much different than an LS swap as far as electronics are concerned. Motor mounts would probably need to be custom. I hear they like boost as well, but have never actually dealt with one. I don’t see much benefit, you’ll have less power and probably worse fuel economy than just swapping a run of the mill 5.3 in it. But it is definitely possible if that’s what you’re asking.

Take it from a guy who used to work at a BMW shop. You don't want that in your truck. If you did go inline 6, and I personally think you'd get originality points at least, go with the Toyota 2JZ, a far superior and proven power making platform.
