Brief summary and background info:
-Steering box is not original, receipt from previous owner shows it was replaced with a reman unit before I got the truck.
-Bought the truck 4 years ago with a p/s leak, replaced the lines.
-Pump started whining 6 months later, replaced the pump.
-Pump **** the bed 2 years ago, replaced it.
-Pitman seal replaced around this time.
-Blew out a high pressure line 6 months later backing into my driveway, replaced it. Steering had been loose and wander-ey so I tightened the adjustment on top of the box ever so slightly, like 1/8 turn.
-Vacation to Chattanooga in February, lost all p/s on top of Lookout Mountain. Line at the back of the EVO bypass pipe was leaking because it worked loose somehow and lost fluid. Tightened it, topped off fluid, all good since then.
-Sustained higher RPMs (say, climbing a hill while towing) and the pump starts whining. Goes away when RPM drops again.

That brings us to now. Tried to cross a branch on my grandma's farm and buried the truck, not a lot of wheel turning but some high RPMs to try to get out. Tried to turn the wheels some but during the action all p/s functions were lost. Got out of the bog, pump was full of fluid, not a drop of p/s fluid leaking from anywhere, no sticks or anything jamming up the center link.

First question: what the ****?
2nd question: What is causing this to happen repeatedly? Are 35s really though much trouble for IFS with a 6" lift? SAS is in the parts-gathering stage and can't start it yet.
3rd Q: is this because of the steering gear? time for a new one that doesn't suck ass?

Any ideas?

Not really sure what's all going on with out seeing it in person. But heres what I think. You were on a mountain and lost ps fluid. Anytime you run a pump dry it can burn it up or effect. It. Yes you did fill it up and it worked fine. But you've had issues since the beginning. My guess if your pump bit the dust however I know reman boxes are ****. What I did because I have bad luck with ps , install all new parts from rock auto. Ac delco , took my time and did it right. Replaced pump, lines, gearbox, and installed a filter. I also have a bypass installed for the evo. Gear box leaks nowadays but long as I can turn I really dont care. Btw gearbox is 1yr old roughly...... now if I were you I lift up the front end and turn lock to lock to see if still binds or whines. Then i test for leaks and then I also check the fluid for metal shavings.

Where is the filter installed? Does it see pressure? Do you have a photo or link to such a filter? Is it worth considering a thermostat on a system with a cooler (in a cold climate)?
When changing the fluid (where there's a HydroBoost system), where do you drain the fluid from and does it just drain or have to be pumped?

Thinking about changing my fluid (and maybe fit a filter)and haven't a clue where to start.

Thanks, I'm driving my other truck in the meantime and will be away for work all week so I won't get a chance to work on it til next week. I got the truck all cleaned up underneath so I'm planning on jacking it up and turning it to try and bleed any air out and see what's binding. If it still doesn't work then I'll know it's time to start replacing stuff.

Hopefully I didn't burn up the pump because they are a ***** to change but I'm so used to doing them I already have another pump with lines in the shop ready to go. Granted, they're not AC Delco but I already have them.

So you got a new AC Delco steering box? My box is probably part of my issue so I'll look for one.

Can you send a link to what filter you're using and where do you have it installed? Mine doesn't have one so that definitely can't hurt.

Yes I have a photo. No I wouldnt think it needs a thermal stat . I installed a ps cooler. Stock gmt400 style. Filter cannot tell pressure nor is it see through. I installed it on the low pressure side. Forgot the brand but it might be ez flow

I'll post some pics of the filter and the gear box I got was an ac delco reman
