Having trouble finding a new one. I have an evap code and I had the shop smoke it. They said it was the vent valve that is mounted to the side of the canister. I guess on some it's called the close valve. Anybody know where I can find one for a 1999 Suburban K1500? The shop said that GM no longer makes it and he found a replacement for $250. With labor it was going to be almost $500 so I said I'd take it home and do it myself.

What code are you getting? If I recall, I think it's normal to get smoke out of the valve if smoke testing: it's normally open. You can disconnect the wire harness and apply 12VDC to the vent valve to close it. At least on the GMT800 trucks this is how I've done it, and these EVAP systems are pretty much unchanged between those...On the fancy scan tools you can simply command closing it.

The vent valve I believe is next to the charcoal canister, near the bottom right/front of the engine bay. If it's discontinued, hit the wrecking yards, I'm sure you'll find one there.

Seems like you could get around needing it..... 1-tons didn't come with one, if you're talking about the purge valve. I suppose the PCM programing may be different, Though.

Really? I didn't know that. I "thought" I had seen it on my 00 K3500/5.7...

I may be getting the name wrong.

Here is my canister: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=88251&cc=1353451&pt=5180&jsn=334

The vent/valve/solinoid goes on the large hole on the right. I just have a vented cap, there.

Here's the apparatus that I don't have: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=929604&cc=1353451&pt=16992&jsn=322
The hose would fit on the previously mentioned hole/port. It's listed for my truck, but I have never had one. I would have assumed all 3500's would be exempt, but maybe some got it? Is your truck CA emissions, maybe?

Yes, that's definitely the vent valve. Here's good picture of one:

@454cid I looked at my K3500 and you are absolutely correct. There's no vent valve. There's a wire going to what appears to be a dummy connector: it doesn't go anywhere. I had never paid attention.

Now I'm curious how this system works, or if it even has a functioning EVAP check from the ECU.. without the vent valve?

I know when I bought the K3500 I couldn't fill the gas tank. I didn't think much about it. Then when I was checking my other newer truck that had an EVAP code I checked the purge valve for fun on my K3500 and it was bad. I put another good one and later on I remembered that the gas fill-up issue went away. But I couldn't in my mind figure out why or how those 2 were related?

Sure is expensive. I think I'd try to find one at a salvage yard first. I'd also want to look into verifying it's not something else. $500 for labor seems awful expensive to me, for something like this, although, I guess the cost of living in CA is more expensive than MI.

Exactly what code are you getting?

EDIT: I wonder if it can be had without the bracket? It might be cheaper that way. I didn't thoroughly look.

I don't think I even have the wire on my truck.

Is the newer truck a GMT-800? I use to drive a work van that was 800 based and had the gas fill problem... in the winter!
