Column shifter length

I have the stock column shifter and I find it too short.
I would like to have a longer one, perhaps I could solve with a long knob, if the knob can be unscrewed from the shifter,is it?
But I am also wondering if I can switch from the factory security system to a push button type, like in my jeep.
No one did that?
It s annoying to pull and shift

So you want it to stick out beyond the steering wheel? It’s probably buried in there to reduce risk of impaling you.

I’m pretty sure across the board, that’s always been the design for all manufacturers. Column mounted that is. My ‘64 Thunderbird had a really slim chrome shifter. Wouldn’t want that sticking in my eye!
Edit: Actually it did stick out! Probably didn’t matter in that car anyway, the dashboard was solid metal and at the top it came to a point. Would’ve acted like a guillotine.
