15 years ago I started Derbying. My first one was by far the best one. Ran 2 heats. 2cd one is the one I caused serious trouble in. The car was a 1987 Crown Vic Stock run what you brung. Rules were basically stock vehicle and suspension with the only exceptions to the battery and fuel tank. Stock fuel tanks were to be secured using 3 different measures. Door and hoods needed to be chained shut. No more than 3" of fuel in the tank which was my downfall for the Ford. Upright tank. Now the rules were a bit murky here....must have radiator fan unless the fan shroud is missing. So we opted for the missing fan shroud in this vehicle. Gave us another 7-8 inches. Which you can see by the pics....Really didnt need it.
The first run, we ran the battery in the stock location. Which was fine till a Lincoln got hit, swung around and clipped me. The battery fell forward and broke the negative posts cable. Vehicle died. Relocated battery to where the AC condenser was and secured with one of our numerous idle seat belt straps, lengthened the cables and viola, back in business.
The second run was my hell on wheels run. If the damned car started one more time, I would of been 3rd place. Instead I ended up 4th which was a good thing. The car had no more in it. That run, there was a borderline blacklisted car. An early 70s Lincoln. All metal tank with miles of air around that engine. The highlight of my run was after I bunked 2 Caprices into the concrete barrier, I only had backwards to go. That Lincoln was there. Figuring that was gonna be the end of my run, I gave her hell and reversed full speed. Cause we drilled the front shocks, the front was way lower than the back and I ran the back of the car into the Lincoln. I nailed something in the engine as it made the death rattle then blew. After that, I got hung up and was on the verge of being disqualified for non movement when someone hit the Lincoln and freed me. Then I went for broke hitting everyone I could that was moving. In the end, a couple flat front tires, low gas and a missing alternator belt doomed me.
The event was recorded by one of the local TV channels and when I went to get a copy, I was told it was gonna be used for a local show. When that show failed to air, I was told all that footage was destroyed to make room for new footage. While cell phones were gaining in popularity and such, no one really had cameras to record that. So the pics I got are actual photos I took pics of to upload here. The years printed on the back were 2002 for my first one and 2003 for the second one.
