They really are a pain.

Is the nut on the axle supposed to be not torqued down much? When I removed the clip and the key way, I was able to easily spin it off, is that normal?

I could easily turn the nut on mine. I think that's normal.

Yes, normal.

What you want is zero lash on roller bearings. You tighten the inner nut tight while spinning the drum, then back it off 1/4 turn. When you install the outer nut tight over the lock ring it will push the inner nut across the threads. This will give no pre-load or leave any lash.

Some older GM's have barrel bearings instead of roller bearing. These should have light pre-load. Install the same way except only back off the inner nut 1/8 turn after tightening.

If you have a single nut, no preload.

Shoes are done on one side. At least I chose to do the worst side first lol. After a lot of degreasing and cleaning, and the use of the brake tools I bought this morning, we are back together. I will wait until Saturday to do the other side.

Is your truck JB8? I'm trying to figure out what size shoes my crew cab has (without pulling the drums!) and it's JB8. The backing plates look to have more contour/dish instead of being flat. So I'm thinking that's the 13x3.5 ones. It does stop well!

Got the other side done today. I upgraded (I think) to speed bleeders in the front and rear. So far the jury is out on them, as I hadn’t gotten my brakes successfully bled yet, largely due to the ABS BS and the wife getting impatient since I spent the whole day working on the truck. Decided to hang it up for today and smoke some queso on the traeger and knock a few back.

Comparison of the regular bleeder and the longer speed bleeder

NAPA part numbers if anyone wants to try them. The bigger ones are for the front calipers

I was also worried about making sure my axle nut was tight enough, so I went to Oreilly and found this axle nut socket for Dodge trucks that fit the axle nut perfectly. I tightened up the side I did today, and went back and pulled the axle on the passenger side and was able to tighten it a little more while still being able to spin the wheel good.
