1995 Suburban fuel gauge incorrect reading

Always reads E. Tested gauge out earlier, needle is working as it should. Thinking of the possibility the purple sending wire might be grounded somewhere. Is that what would make it read E?

Broken/open wire drives needle towards (or beyond) "Full".

Grounded wire drives needle toward (or beyond) "Empty".
