Do the engine swap first. You're going to be doing a lot of work under the hood, and the paint will get scratched up. Once you have the swap done, pull the engine back out and do the paint. Then I'm torn between trying to get it painted soon or trying to track down a LS to swap in. Unfortunately my budget will only allow for one of those this year.
What are your guys/gals thoughts on what I should try and tackle first?
Paint or motor/trans?
If I do the paint first, I would definitely save the engine bay for later when the swap happens. Not pulling a motor twice. I'm all for working hard, but working smarter is how I like to roll these days.Do the engine swap first. You're going to be doing a lot of work under the hood, and the paint will get scratched up. Or, if you just want a driver-quality paint job, pull the 350, paint the engine bay Rustoleum gray (black hides leaks), and swap in the LS. Then do the exterior paint at your leisure.
If you want to hide leaks, paint it black. If you want to stay on top of maintenance, paint it gray. If you paint it gray, you'll have to wash it more often.Interesting about the gray in the engine bay, never heard or thought of that before.
Definitely one of the options.Yes paint the bottom 10” with rattle cans just to make it look presentable and drive it. Then after the LS swap is worked out get it painted. Believe me I was all in a rush to get my car painted and then once it was done I’ve been babysitting the paint job every time I work under the hood.
Definitely one of the options.
Just get some paint on the hood, rollpan and tailgate to protect it.
And since it's gonna be a driver and not a full on show truck, I'm not scared of a scratch here or there. Part of actually enjoying them is the war wounds they get.
When I painted my C10 I knew I was going to drive it, it’s been in our family since ‘72. I didn’t build it to be a shop queen. There’s dents, scratches, and the inside of the bed hasn’t been touched. But that’s what I wanted, I wanted a comfortable daily driver that looked good and I wasn’t afraid to get dirty. Do the LS, it’s very nice to start it up in -10* and not worry about choking it. Also gets 19-20mpg on the highway if I keep my foot out of it.Definitely one of the options.
