I'm trying to replicate the SS454 axle with parts that CAN be found vs. the almost unattainable REAL SS454 axle...

...The main reason I'm doing this is for better braking! The 4.8 LS I put in the truck is plenty fast, but the current brakes are really not up to the task of getting me stopped quickly
There's another thread in this forum where a guy has a real, live 454SS axle, and if I understand this right, it's got the same crappy 254mm leading-trailing shoe brakes you've got now.

That's what I want to get away from! I want the bigger 11" brakes from the SF 14 bolt rear. Whatever I do axle-wise, I'll redrill the bigger drums for 5 lug application. Shurkey, you've been a big proponent of the SF 14 bolt for better brakes!! Gonna take your knowledge to the bank on this

I don't know about the GMT400's but on squarebodys the centre bore is much larger on the 14 SF vs the 8.5. I don't know where you guys live but to weld up holes and redrill axles where I live would be hourly deal at a machine shop. by that time you're well on your way to buying new axles... let's remember these are 30 year old axles where the axle is the inner bearing race (same as the 8.5). if you can buy stock axles with the correct pattern and centre bore, this is a no brainer for myself. have you tried Tom's Rearend? they make their own axles inhouse and have good pricing.

Are both single wheel? What brake option on each (JB5/JB6)? A picture of bare axle housing ends with measurements of backing plate mounting flange hole distances would be great!! jt

I’m working on the 14 bolt right now, and I have the 10 bolt sitting here that we just pulled out of the truck. So if anyone needs any measurements let me know.
Are they both 2wd rear ends?
And if so, where did the donor come from?
Year, model etc?
I'd like to eventually swap to a 14 bolt. But there are so many different ones, it's easy for an old fella like me to go blind reading all the stuff about them.

I’ll work on this, the 10 bolt is complete and sitting outside.
