Sorry if this isn’t the right place. But what is the tube from the bottom of the air filter housing used for. It looks like it goes to the exhaust manifold. Is it critical that it be on there?

Not critical. Its so that in cold weather conditions, the air entering the TBI is warmer than the out side air. Once the engine warms up, there may or may not be a vacuum operated flap that closes to stop the hot air from the exhaust manifold from reaching the TBI. This is not exhaust gas, only the heat from the top of the exhaust manifold.

The heated-air intake is particularly useful if driving at 40--45 degrees F and raining. That's prime throttle-icing conditions, which this system was intended to prevent.

Also makes for slightly better fuel economy when the weather--and the engine--is "cold". That is, with the engine less than fully warmed-up. The additional heat on the intake air helps to vaporize the fuel. Once the engine is completely warmed-up, it's the heated intake air is not as helpful.

You're really not gaining anything by disabling the heated air intake; and fall/winter/spring you're likely to have issues.

It was more of an issue with carburetors. At near-freezing temperatures the carburetor venturii would cause a pressure drop that allowed atmospheric water droplets to condensate and freeze on the carburetor jets. You'd fire your engine up, get a mile from home, and if you were aggressive on the throttle, you'd freeze your carb and be stuck in the cold a mile from home. Since exhaust manifolds heat up quickly, they put cheesy metal hoses from the exhaust manifolds up to the air filter housing. It worked decently on carbs, but since EFI doesn't require a venturi, there's no need any more. In summer months they also duct hot air up to the intake tract, so southern guys like me always removed them.

Yeah, because spraying cold gasoline onto the throttle blades doesn't drop their temperature--especially since the gasoline is beginning to vaporize, absorbing heat in the process.

Put a few drops of gasoline on your hand, then wave it around at 40 degrees F. Won't be cold at all.

Right?

Spraying 35 degree fuel onto 35 degree throttle blades does not drop the temperature significantly. Sure, some fuel is going to evaporate, causing temperature drop, but not a significant amount.

Spraying 35 degree fuel onto 35 degree throttle blades and then passing it through a venture that drops the pressure makes a significant temperature change on top of the temperature change you get from evaporation.

It the TBI trucks ive heard it was a wax style valve. Meaning not a single one today still does the job it used to when new
