I suspect that at least part of the downsizing of filters is newer oil technology, not just newer engines.

Maybe metallurgy and manufacturing tolerances too?

The Burb uses AC #PF1218, the '06 uses PF46E. I have old ones of both, sometime I'll cut em open and we'll see how much filter is inside each can. In Texas, for the last several years, if you get caught throwing away oil filters, it's $500 fine per filter. Might be more,now, that's what it was when the law was enacted. And finding someone to take the stupid things has been difficult.

When running synthetics even if I change the oil every 10k miles I still change filter at every 3-5K. With the dead dino dinner oil by the 3-5 it has accumulated enough suspended particles that the whole system is changed.

Have a sample of your used oil analyzed by a lab.

First guess: you're changing oil too often, you're changing filters too often.

I really need to do this too, but I will say when my 1500 hits 5000 miles on an oil change its rate of consumption is a bit higher than when it's fresh.

Can confirm. When I take my jugs of old oil to O'Reilly, I also take the old filters. I drain them as much as possible, then stick them in the filter box with some folded paper towels to absorb any drips. Back into the O'Reilly's bag they go, usually 4 at a time, before I make the return trip. No gripes so far.

My local walmart has a small dumpster outside, for filters, by the tire center. I don't know if I've ever actually dropped any off, Though.

FYI the Oreily's nearest us (18 miles) has a 5 gallon limit for used oil.
