Was not thrilled with the condition of the fluid. I'd purged 2.5 gallons through it back in 2020 when the #rona first popped off.

No trash in the pan though.

And this is all I was able to pump out of the pan.

Granted it likely took a quart to fill the new cooler, but after dumping what was left in the pan I got less than a gallon out. Then I dumped 6 quarts in and may have to pull as much as a half a quart back out. I seem to remember a filter being a 7 quart job, strange. Guess it wasn't ignorantly low after all. Maybe it just needed more of a purge back when I did it, I remember not finding as much fluid as I'd hoped to. I usually toss 3-4 gallons for a purge.

I've been buying those 5 gallon pails from O'Reilly of Dex 6. It seemed to be the cheapest option for doing multiple vehicles with this transmission.

Is the transmission shifting fine? How many miles did you run between the last fluid change?

Less than 20k, it's always shifted just fine. I paid $16/gal at Walmart for Valvoline ATF, they seemed to be the cheapest by a significant margin.

I got the wiring under the truck secured today and the oil temp sender installed above the oil filter. Awfully close to the exhaust manifold so I used a little heat wrap there. Ran them both under the exhaust heat shield so the convoluted tubing hopefully doesn't melt, but it probably still will.

The trans bung location was of course a compromise. I needed it to be on a flat section, on the driver's side, and near the top so I could reach to do a full 360 weld. That left me with very little clearance to the shift cable, but it'll do when secured like this.

That stud didn't exist in my bolt collection or Ace Hardware, I had to make it myself.

I used speaker wire for both sensors. I got the pod installed too with the gauges, what a pain in the ass that was. I need to join the Glowshift wiring up with the speaker wire and power/ground tomorrow to make it complete.

It's an out west truck. I remember growing up in MI and seeing that rust was what determined a vehicle's life span. Living outside the rust belt had taught me otherwise.

Yes, rust is destroying my truck. When I briefly lived in southwest MO, I noticed many older cars that had all but disappeared in MI. I also noticed that instead if lots of rust, they tended to accumulate dents.

I suppose it also bears mentioning that I've had the oil filter housing out a couple years ago for a reseal and cleaned it up, the manifolds were sandblasted and painted in 2020, the trans came out and I cleaned it up also 2020, and the downpipes came out in 2020 and I spent a considerable amount of time cleaning them with an angle grinder and knotted cup brush prior to reassembly.
