From what I heard from my Mopar friend, they typically corrode and the resistance goes up. The headlights get dim, and eventually the ammeter won't pass enough current for the vehicle to start. But, yes, they can cause fires.

I ran a wire straight from the + terminal of the battery to the voltage regulator instead of the wire that comes out of the firewall and wouldn't you know the alternator started charging. Not only that, but the ammeter works. Still no lights or gauges (besides the ammeter) so I need to see what's going on behind the cluster and fusebox, and I need to use a switched power source to the voltage regulator too.

I've been deciphering the wiring harness. Power goes from the battery to the ammeter to the fuel gauge and then to one side of the fuse box. There is a circuit on that side that provides the signal to the voltage regulator. I've been getting readings of around 0.3v with my DMM going across the fuses on that side, so I suspect a bad connection or wiring somewhere between the ammeter and the fuse box.

I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and re-wire it. When I was getting up close to it, I noticed that it has let some smoke out before. It sure looks like the number 1 fuse got pretty hot, which I believe is the circuit to the voltage regulator.

The wire from the ammeter to the fuel gauge was missing. I added that and the voltage regulator now works off the proper wire and the temp gauge works. Nothing else works yet that I noticed.

I ordered new wheels. Going to run 245/40/18 in the front and 295/35/18 in the back. I would have liked something more "classic" looking but I'm not going to spend thousands on wheels when hundreds will do.

Is that the cam for the "Noise and Fume" generator LS 4.8? ;)

Did you watch Lawrence Tolman take out his new supercharged 4.8 COPO truck for a spin? That thing looks like is going to be a blast. I think I would have just done a RWD instead of the AWD, but LT is a bit unorthodox... it's all good.

Maybe you need an LSA blower for the 4.8 Santa Gertrudis?

Wheels showed up, they are a lot lighter color in person than in the pictures. Since my seats are gray and the wheels are gray-ish, I think I'm going to paint the interior and engine bay in Destroyer Gray.

I hope they fit without too much work. I think the fronts are good, but the back wheel and tire combo is iffy.

I watched that last night. It sure does boogie off the line with AWD.
That '06 Denali of my Dad's, when it was running right, would too. VERY surprising, for a 6,000 pound fullsize SUV, but the 6.0 and 3.73 gears in the diffs did their jobs. I would get it back running, but there's too much wrong with it for me to fix
