If you can't figure a way to make this mod work you don't need it
I do agree it's a super easy mod, but some people just want the look and aren't super handy. Doesn't mean they don't deserve to have their vehicle the way they want it. It could be cool to have a "plug-n-play" thing if it's that easy to print. Just looking at it from both sides.

ok, just had an epiphany for people like me who don't smoke or allow smoking in our vehicles.

For those of us that have the 4dr suv's (Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, Escalade), the ashtray's in the rear doors become trashcans for people. ****** me off when I find trash in it. Years ago someone had the balls to stick gum in it. But what to do w/ them?

W/ todays higher demand of need charging ports, especially on trips, I looking for places to stick some.

So my thought is this: 3D print the top half of the door ashtray w/ a flat top (basically as if the lid was molded in) w/ the mounting clips. drill the hole in the center of the top to mount your favorite usb port & paint to match or leave raw.

For those of us w/ Suburban's:
In the 3rd row seat side walls are 2 ashtray assemblies.
My thought is this: 3D print a flat plate w/ beveled outer edges the same or slightly larger diameter as the ashtray assembly. Then print a 2nd pc to mount to the inside of the panel, this pc would hold the j-clips that the screws would go into. Again, paint to match or leave raw. Drill hole in the center & mount your favorite usb port.

That's a great idea. I have the 2nd and 3rd row ash trays in my burb as well, and I don't usually have 6 people smoking in the back while I'm driving. I can use my parts to start generating a model.

I thought of adding power outlets to the actual pillars. But makes sense nobody uses the ashtrays in this rig .

I had thought of that also, so I stripped a vehicle @ the j/y to see the sheetmetal behind it.
2 problems:
a: if you use the existing holes in the sheet metal, then your forced to mount to where it may not be suitable to your use. otherwise you will have to make new holes into the sheet metal.
b: you have limited depth space to work w/. so say that you wanted to mount a usb port, might not be deep enough.

hence my thoughts of repurposing the useless ashtrays, plenty of space to mount usb ports.
previously I had cut up old b-pillars to use for the 3rd row ashtray replacements. correct color & grain, b-pillars are dirt cheap @ the j/y's.

Well darn. Never thought of that. Glad you make use of the junk yard.

Got some of the final prints in, in a raw finish. They are seriously beautiful and fit perfect. We can't wait to get these listed in a few days!

I've been watching this thread off and on so, I apologize if this has been discussed. What about the original design adjustable vents for 88 - 91? left, center, and right? It's really hard to find OE ones in which the pivot pins aren't worn out.

The issue with the moving parts within the vents are the small dowels and friction fits between multiple components - they would likely end up costing way more than most guys would pay for them per OE style vent ($40+) due to the R&D and time to assemble/QC.

Question for those requesting the USB lighter port - a 2 part design with a back plate and face plate would hide the screw holes, but drive cost up. A one part design is simpler and cheaper to produce. General thoughts on the appearance of the one-part design below?
