Buy a decent steering shaft (U-joint instead of rag joint) and a properly-set-up "stock" steering box, replace worn tie-rod ends, idler arm, etc., and save yourself a mountain of headache.

A rack-and-pinion does nothing inherently better than a non-worn-out conventional system, if the steering box has an appropriate ratio and torsion bar for the application.

The problem is that GM installed too-slow ratios, and too-weak torsion bars in 97% of the steering boxes they installed. Everything that's "wrong" with the OEM steering can be fixed for WAY less than $1850 for a rack-and-pinion kit, and you can drive it on the street just fine.

Every piece of my steering system is brand new including a 12.5 to 1 Redhead steering box. It’s still not as good as my bone stock, 130,000 mile ‘04. There’s no way I’m spending the money to go to rack and pinion, but I have no doubt that it’s better.

Rag joint replaced with U-joint?

What size wheels on the 04? On the GMT400?

Thanks for the info, yeah, they also have a polyurethane rag joint i may try before i do the steering knuckle swap, i hesr some complain that the steering onuckle swap has an issue where it can lock up if the proper heim joint support arm isn’t installed with it

I wasn't aware the 800 boxes swapped over. What are the advantages over a modded 400 box?
They bolt right up using 02 pitman, only part that has to be changed is rag joint gets throwd in trash and 02 has ujoint. Have to do a lil fab work or do what i did, cut a end off a 02 shaft, cut rag joint off, i put w 3" long solid shaft on center that was a tight fit and welded it. It turns a little tighter and sure feels quicker ratio

Why would it need a heim joint? Its not in any kind of bind and is a stright shot
