Thanks. There are a lot of them out there, at least, here in Oregon. I honestly had been looking for a "3+3" crew cab square body before I realized I was pretty much priced out of that. Didn't really know much at all about the GMT400 trucks at the time and now that I pay attention, decent K2500s would seem to be plentiful. I know we're not in the salt like y'all are but I would still think you could find something not too far gone for decent money.

All of y'all looking for a truck/SUV, just keep your eyes open and watching; they're out there! If you make informed searches and evaluation of the trucks in your area, the one for you is out there. Just gotta be patient and don't grab something without checking it out thoroughly.

Tell me about it; it's not too good to see that a small block powered truck only manages 10 mpg in town! If we never had to be in traffic or drive thrus or any other idling...it might get 11 or so. On the road the Burb would get 14-15, even loaded. Only trip in the big truck, we had a good bit of traffic and idling, and that cut it from 14 to 12.
And the Vortec 5.7 has enough grunt off the line to plant you in the seat good, without too much stomping the gas.

7.4 crewcab, 4l80e with us gear overdrive on back of it, stock rear gears, 22 semis.
about 4MPG around town, especially with a lot of idling and short trips, closer to 8-9 at freeway speeds of 65-70.

Ugh, glad I'm not feeding your truck! Half a tank a week in my 5.7 crew cab is bad enough. 34 gallon tank in the pickup, doesn't have the same range of the 42 gallons in the Burb. We generally stay off freeways for the majority of our commutes.....
The big truck did pretty good on the road, on our trip to Austin in November though! No trouble keeping up with the other vehicles, doing 75-80 between towns on 290.

I think the only 400 trucks that get good mileage are 4.3 or 5.0 with the 5 speed and you gotta drive only on the highway....
My brothers 99 Suburban got better than 20 on the highway. My 99 Tahoe with a cammed 305 did as well as 23 mpg all highway. It was on P305/50R20s at the time. My Express always got 17-19 mpg on trips. The 383 does better, it has gotten 20.7 on a trip and I have yet to play around with lean cruise. I think some of the gains on the van were going through everything on it. I put new wheel bearings, new calipers, new brake hoses, new front rotors, turned the drums, replaced everything on the drum brakes, went to synthetic in the diff and the 10.5" 14-bolt has 3.73s. The tires I put on it are narrower and a little taller. I think the 4" cartride LS3 style MAF is more accurate as well. The 383s 11:1 compression is also an efficiency boost.

Longest trip my burb has seen is 40 miles one way on mountain roads taking the family for a hike. Seems my wife doesn't like riding in it, maybe due to the missing side steps and being a bit noisy compared to her kia sorento daily driver.
