Hey guys. Got an 88 k1500 with 4x6 dashboard speakers. Wondering if theres anything i can do to fit 6.5's in the dash? Some kind of adapter plate?

In my experience, 4x6s don't sound that great and i already have a set of 4 Kicker 6.5s lying around that i need something to do with.

Thanks

Well considering you're trying to stuff a big speaker into a hole that's too small, no, there's no adapter plate for that application. I don't own a pre-94 with the 4x6 dash but I've seen quite a few and there is not a lot of room right there. I don't think you're going to get anything close to a 6.5" in there.

EDIT - The oddball size speakers really aren't that terrible as long as you don't buy garbage. I have had 4x6s (and 4x10s) that I've been very happy with and I have very high standards when it comes to stereos.

Ok so I'm probably realistically better off selling the set of 6.5s and just buying 4x6s?

You can buy 4inch round speakers or the 4x6 plate speakers as other alternatives

4x6 plates.

More $$$, but better sound. They'll handle 150w. Those ones listed above are only rated for 25w. Not any better than the stockers.
Even if you never intend on hitting those plate speakers with 150w, they're gonna sound better than those Kicker knock-offs.
Plus they're made outa better materials so they'll last longer sitting in the sun up on the dash.
And they're round. Like a speaker should be!

Little more than I'm willing to spend for this truck, sewlow. Although Polk's do sound fantastic. I have Polk 6.5s all the way around in my car. But i would ideally like to keep it as cheap as possible

Unfortunately "Cheap" and "Good" don't usually go together when it comes to speakers. If I had to pick between the two that you posted, I'd pick the Kickers. Personally though I'd get something nicer like the Polks. I've used a couple of Polk plate 4x6s like the ones posted below and loved them.

I'm not entirely familiar with the older interiors, but aren't those 4x6s going to be the only two speakers in the whole cab? If so I'd much rather do it once and do it right. Those Polks would probably keep up with a sub pretty well if you ever decide to add a sub and tune most of the bass out of them. If you ever want any real bass you'll need to do that anyway, even the nicest 4x6 or 4" won't have much output at all below 100hz or so. As another option, you could use a nice set of 4" components with a separate tweeter and an adapter plate. Something like this.

The advantage of a setup like this would be the ability to custom mount your tweeter and direct it toward you for better sound. Usually the more expensive route, though. Those Focal speakers are just an example, cheapest set of 4" components I could find on Crutchfield. I run a setup just like this for my truck's rear speakers with DLS components and it's great.

Realistically though, if you're just looking for something cheap then I'd at least try and find something with a rubber surround instead of foam like the ones you posted. Like Sewlow said, they'll last a lot longer. FWIW, I run all Kicker KS series in my Suburban and I'm very happy with them, and I consider it my budget stereo. Here's a link to the 4x6s from that series.

P.S. - Worth mentioning, I use Crutchfield for all my car audio fitment research and some other things, but I rarely actually buy anything from them. They're usually pretty overpriced. Once you find something you like, punch the model number into eBay or Google shopping and buy from there.
