Normal axle end play?

What would be considered normal for a 10 bolt 8.5?

You talking about the axle shaft itself moving in and out inside the housing? You'll get somewhere near a 1/4 inch of play... The shafts are only held in by a c clip on the end of each shaft.

Pretty much as long as the axles don't come out you're good.

The c-clip type retaining system (as mentioned) allows for a fair bit of movement.

Strong enough for it's intended use, yet allows for quicker/easier assembly line construction. Backlash (gear engagement) on the pinion gear is the important measurement. I've yet to see a c-clip axle fail because the clip came adrift or it "worn out".

By comparison, the Full floating axle has virtually no play.

It's just the way they are designed....
