I bought a homemade dump trailer that was made from a heavy duty truck and I need to know what axle this is so I can get replacement parts for it.

I want to replace the wheel bearings before I use it for any hauling. And I want to repair/rebuild the brakes so I can have trailer brakes. Hopefully they are hydraulic brakes so I can use an electric-over-hydraulic pump that a lot of boats use.

Oh, good point on the 2-speed, is that what that electrical thing is hanging off to the side of the pinion?

Pull the old bearing(s) out, show the part numbers (race, and roller assembly "cup and cone") to the counterperson. You don't need the axle brand and model, you need the bearing numbers.

Wild guess with no evidence: Two bearing assemblies on each side, four bearings total. They're all the same part number. You'll want a gasket for the axle shaft, and a seal for the inside. Bring the old parts with you when you go to the parts store.

Second wild guess with no evidence: Clean-up the existing bearings; inspect the condition. The bearings you have now are as-good or BETTER than the brand-new ones from China.

Around here, NAPA is the "truck parts" specialist. But that may not be true everywhere.

And I want to repair/rebuild the brakes so I can have trailer brakes. Hopefully they are hydraulic brakes so I can use an electric-over-hydraulic pump that a lot of boats use.
They're hydraulic. Your first photo shows the brake plumbing including the rubber brake hose. That photo also shows evidence of wheel cylinder or axle grease leakage. Inspect carefully.

I'm no help on electric-over-hydraulic brake pump. Never heard of it. I have a boat trailer with surge brakes--there's a plain ol' master cylinder that gets stroked based on the vehicle slowing down faster than the trailer--the trailer "pushes onto the hitch", which pumps the master cylinder.

Oh, good point on the 2-speed, is that what that electrical thing is hanging off to the side of the pinion?
Yup.

At the AG equiptment place i worked at we had a 5 ton Dodge truck with two speed electric axle with those type split rim wheels. They were a hassle. Gotta run tubes and liners. Less and less tire shops would work on them. They look like split rim, can't quite see the ring end. If they are split rim, they can kill you if you don't know how to work them. Good luck.

Thanks for the insight guys!

Your probably right about the current bearings being as good or better than the replacements that would go in it, I'll inspect them and go from there.

I thought about a surge brake hitch but I can only find ones that are good up to 8,000lbs. I want at least 10klbs but a higher rating would be ideal. Electric-over-hydraulic is essentially unlimited because its controlled with your in-cab brake controller.

And Yea, I looked at the rims, I cant see any lock ring that split rims have. So hopefully a big-rig tire shop can replace the tires safely.

The first thing I would do is ask the seller what truck it was made from, but to me it looks like an early 70's gm(c) 60 to 70 series truck axle. Another place to start would be the gear splitter, it will have a name/manufacturer/maybe a series number on it, you can do a search and its application may pop up. I do ebay searches and sometimes the sellers give a complete application chart for a part. And if it does have split rims, get others, later years will interchange. If you cant get the axle bearings, you got a great cylinder for a log splitter.
