I just got done rebuilding my 95 Tahoe TBI motor which originally came with a 168 tooth flywheel. The kit I ordered came with a 153 tooth that was balanced to the rotating assembly. I only discovered this after attempting to start the new build. I purchased a starter made for an 89 Iroc that came with 153 tooth flywheel. It is a much larger starter and the nose will not fit into the hole in the cast aluminum converter cover.

Has anyone ran into a similar problem?

I need a starter that has the small profile and is made for 153 tooth flywheels. Does anyone know a vehicle I can purchase a starter for that will fit? Will one of these expenaive aftermarket starters work? Do I have to find a different torque converter cover?

You could try a Caprice starter that was installed on the 5.7 cars. They were for 153 tooth flex plates and were a reduction starter also.
