1998 Chevy suburban, 1500, 4x4, 5.7 v8.

Basically, I can start my truck, and drive it fine, but when I go to shut it off, it doesn't.

The headlights stay on

The engine continues to run.

BUT, the key moves freely in the cylinder, from front to back, no jams..

Anyone with experience on this issue?

Thankyou.

Just a broken lock cylinder. About a 30 dollar part. You can kill it by pulling the ign relay/fuse and removing the neg batt cable.

The ignition switch is on the bottom of the steering colmn. Do you think that's the problem?

I have a feeling its not the keys/tumblers/lock cylander, because it moves to start, off, and accessory ( backwards) with ease.

You said that when you take the key out, the truck is still powered up. It isn't disengaging. Nothing else I can think of would cause that other than a broken lock cylinder.
