Pretty sure it's a 700R4. But I think it's based on the engine it came equipped with. I would imagine all 2500/3500 series had the TH400, but looks like the K1500 with 4.3/5.0 got the 3 speed (TH400) OR 4 speed (700R4), but the 5.7 got the TH400 only? Look here:

Probably best to look at the transmission oil pan bolt/pattern. But probably easier to just go for a drive and see if you have overdrive, LOL. And if you drive the truck then you probably already know the answer to the question. :rockit:

Interesting. It says my truck was only available with a 4.3 V6 or a 6.2 diesel. The transmission would be either a 5 speed manual or a 4 speed auto with overdrive. (page 6)

I have a regular cab stepside with a 350 and 700R4.

Um, that is interesting. My Dad also has an '89 regular cab short bed (or '88?, can't remember now) and his also has a 5.7/700R4...

The 4.3 and the 6.2 were base model engines. the 5.0 and 5.7 were available with different trim packages or as a special order. My 1988 K3500 window sticker listed the 4.3 as the base engine and it was optioned with the 5.7

What transmission came in a 1988 k1500. I have a th350 and know that it's not stock
Almost certainly a 700R-4.

GM is not likely to put a 400 in anything unless they have to--CAFE requirements would push them towards overdrives.

So unless the '1500 had a diesel, it's sure to get a 700.
