I just joined this form very excited about posting! One of the reasons why I joined, is that I'm looking at doing this also. My concern was using the f i Tech unit and the ignition aspect. sorry not to eligible on ignition systems. If we were to get a GM HEI distributor, what would control it?
Hei is a standalone system.

Hei is a standalone system.

Yep, HEI is a stand alone ignition system, mate that with a stand alone fuel delivery system and a manual trans or stand alone transmission controller and your good to go. Makes it real easy to diagnose problems too that way!

Planning on doing the same thing to a '89 with a five speed. I send a request to FITech technical support and got the following answer

Hi
you're on the right path, I did this with my father's 91 Caprice wagon.
You want to use the go Street 400 and piggyback it over your existing
system. So yes keep your factory distributor including all your factory
input sensors like air temp, and you will have to share the TPS signal
between the factory computer and the FiTech throttle body. But you'll
find a set up works extremely well. You won't even get a check engine
light on the stock computer. Anything else let us know

Vehicle Make:
Chevrolet

Model:
C1500

Year:

Which FiTech product do you need support with?:
30003

How can we help you?:
looking to install the 400 hp Easy EFI system on my truck. It has stock
TBI unit in place now. Was going to purchase an Edelbrock 2104 (or
Summit Racing equivalent) manifold. Going to use a Walbro in tank pump
system like this

Hopefully this all works Last question is ignition. Can I run the stock
Distributor and computer to control ignition or do I need a one wire
hookup non-computer dizzy?

Thanks
Tracy

Yes, but you have to make your own timing curve. The timing control is basically for idle in stop and go traffic. There is a good chain on chevelle.com with all kinds of tuning info .
Explain? the junk i have lets me program a curve, total timing, initial, vacuum advance.
