I was changing the fluid on my rear diff. I have 14 bolt full float, I've had the truck for 40-60k miles, sits at 140k right now. I don't think it had ever the rear worked on, if it did they didn't replace the gasket and just put RTV on it instead. I noticed there was a lot of metal on the magnet when I took the cover off. Then I saw two big chunks of metal and where they were missing from. My question is this ok to drive on for a bit? I know I'll need to replace it, but that'll have to wait for now. Also does anyone know what may have caused this?

Are the big chunks part of the ring/pinion teeth? Metal on the magnet is pretty normal .

Then i'd say its fine, unless any teeth look damaged, i'd run it. Being a 14 bolt FF it would take an awful lot to actually nuke that thing.

Any recommendations on using sealant with the gasket?

personally I use a tiny bit just enough to hold the gasket in place while putting the cover on

Yeah. I have a hunch it's going to need replaced. Any ideas on torque specs?
