You gotta be WAAY off with the distributor for a vortec not to start and run, even if it runs poorly. Cam timing should be +/- 2* I think. And if no rpm and no fire, I'd go after ignition module in the distributor, and at worse case double check the plug too, not seated all the way and it won't run. Only 3 things really stop a vortec from running, crank sensor, ignition module in distributor, and fuel pump.
