I've learned to trust your advice regarding transmissions.
I would not expect that 5/16 gap between converter and flexplate was excessive...but if you say so...
The more spacers installed to take up that gap, the more-likely the converter hub pilot won't engage the crankshaft properly. But 1/16" shouldn't be a problem, and 1/8" may not be.
[EDIT] I looked in my '88 C/K service manual, there is NO spec for the gap between converter and flexplate, except that the converter needs to be "fully seated" in the pump during installation, and then bolted to the flexplate as the assembly/trans installation progresses.
No spec given in the '97 C/K service manual that I can find.
