An 8.1 is a great motor, until you go to modding it. Like you said, **** is crazy expensive. My buddy has one in a 2500hd with an Allison behind it. It's a stroker, makes a **** ton of power but he's got sooooooo much money in it. He's one of those guys who just wants to do what he wants to do, we been tight for over 30 years so I just laugh at him. Oh, he has a whipple waiting to go on it too....
Not much you can do as far as heads go but bottom end of the 8.1 is just a tall deck 4.250 bore bbc. Rotating assembly is same as big block, cam, everything except heads, cooling system and the outta head bolts where dowel pins go are moved in 1/4"

bore stroke

366T = 3.935" x 3.76"
396 = 4.096" x 3.76"
402 = 4.125" x 3.76"
427 = 4.250" x 3.76"
427T = 4.250" x 3.76"
454 = 4.250" x 4.00"
496 = 4.250" x 4.37" (2001 Vortec 8100, 8.1 liter)
502 = 4.466" x 4.00"
572T = 4.560" x 4.375" (2003 "ZZ572" crate motors)

T = Tall Deck

ALL production big blocks used a 6.135" length rod.

The 496 uses a 4.37" stroke crank, and IIRC nothing is the same. I had one that I wanted to build, couldn't find any info on it. Rayler in Commifornia has parts for em, they told me even the cam won't work, I believe the firing order was different. Found a vid of one of their employee's trucks, of course with a 496 with a ZZ502 cam. I said WTF, you told me nothing will interchange, and then told me the firing order change. But theres no aftermarket for them, one reason I got rid of it. Raylar is the only one that i know of that does anything with them, and they are ******' expensive. Can do with a Vortec 454 and get more out of it. ****, 060" over and a 4.25 crank and have a 496....

L31Max did a 454 cam in an 8.1. The heads are pretty good stock, you'd just need to chop that baffle out of the intake and you'd be set with some headers.

From what I understand the crank, cam, and pistons are not the same as a vortec 454. I may have misunderstood my buddy, but I'm fairly sure that's what he said.

Theres one for sale near me for $400. Needs rebuild, but not a huge deal. But no intake. Dunno why someone would want just the intake, when it fits the 8.1 only. I can build a Vortec 454 cheaper than the 8.1. Just need the money lol.

Probably wanted the intake as a core to cut it up, port it and graft a 90mm TB to.

Actually have two or them. One has a factory 425 hp HO marine cam in it. The other has the $168 at the time GM 454/502 HO crate engine cam. I bought both of mine with under 100K on them and both at less than half the cost of a 6.0L with 3x the miles.

Well i have 2 weeks off cause someone tested positive at work, so the last 8-9 hours I've been on the 'net looking at builds n youtube vids. I also missed out on the super cheap truck with the 454, so as of now, gonna put the 406/RJ in the Yukon, and get a 6.0/4l80 for the 'hoe. I knew the LSs can make power, but with a stock motor n a turbo getting 600 horse out of em, and not overly expensive. Co-worker has a truck with the 6.0 with bad ECM we think, cause truck doesn't run n gauges won't work. He's tired of messing with it, and I can get ECMs all day just at one junkyard. prolly get the motor for a coupe hundred bucks. Run it stock, maybe a cam/springs, then look for hair dryer stuff....
