I haven't ran it through any crank cases yet, I'm scared of what the OP is scared of, taking to much 'good gunk' off the seals that might cause a leak.

It may be possible, but in my experience, it's better to find the problem in the driveway than when you're in the middle of no where and just blew out a seal.

Case and point, after my recent 411 computer swap, I was under the pickup running a new ground reference line for the sending unit. Turns out, the brackets the fuel tank straps lock into were rusted out so bad that I could remove the tank straps with my bare hands and drop the tank. Better at home than in the middle of the woods in the U.P. Or a Michigan pothole shaking it loose at 70mph.
