Hey guys I posted this in the stupid question thread. I'm sure it's a pretty commonly asked question but I couldnt seem to find an answer and I'm not sure how much attention people pay to the stupid question thread.

Anyways, can I update my 89 guages to some later model ones? I dont know for sure what yeah they started using needles but I know my 94's had needles. Can I swap out the guage cluster and it actually work? I cant stand the round moon ones. (not sure what they are called)

I would like to be able to get a factory tach in there too. Is there already a tach signal into the cab or would I have to run one off the coil?

yes you can swap, be best to find a cluster from a 91, you only need to move 3 wires and add the tach wire for that one to work

the 92-94 cluster requires you to change plugs and add the drac unit

Cool! Thanks for the advice. I'll see if I can hunt down a 91 cluster.

Ive done alot of research on this subjct.. From what i read, a '91 gauge cluster WITH the tach, its very hard because they are rare. You could always buy the one without a tach. That all depends what your looking for. I am goign to do a 94 cluster in my '90 because i got it for a really good price.

heres a few links i got for it

This thread explains to you the extra work required to do the 94 in a '90, or your case '89 swap

This one is to calibrate your new cluster to your truck (from your wheel size, rear gear ratio etc.. (i am curently doing this mod right now, you can buy the DIP switch off ebay)

Good luck!

Unforttunately i wont be completing the mod till nex summer since the enging is out and the truck is going through a full remodel... but i will keep you posted!

Sorry to jack this, I have a few problems with my 88 cluster, is a cluster from a 90 going to be a direct drop in?

yes and no, it will drop in but the cluster has the calibration for gear and tire size so if the donor cluster came from a truck with a different ratio or tire size then it will need recalibrating.

92+ used a drac unit to calibrate the speedo, 88-91 had a chip in the cluster

My '89 had a '94 Cluster in it with the tach. Not sure how the PO wired it up though. It worked good and looked better.
