The best GMT400 I've hauled with is a 2000 GMC 3500 HD with front leaf springs, a 7.4 Vortec, NV4500, and a 4:56 rear end... now it's a 12 ft stake truck so I guess that may or may not count :)

As far as towing with a 4x4 instead of a 2WD... unless I'm on snow or mud, I've never felt worried or uncomfortable towing with a 2WD. They actually squat down to level when towing and actually worry me less because you have no transfer case.... I believe it's a little easier on the transmission because it goes straight to the rear driveshaft and not through a transfer case... may or may not be true.

obviously the strongest trucks are the RCLB's but I like the longer wheelbase, I feel safer because its a bigger truck which tricks my brain into thinking it can handle the weight better lol.

I think you have the best towing set up in a realistic pickup truck though, 454, 5 speed, air bags, and then 4:10s so you can still drive up and down the road without having to run 3000rpms....

4x4 isn't a must have for towing but since you take it camping all over the state I think I'd want 4x4 too... then the crew cab for hauling people/dogs/stuff.

If I were to have a GMT400 tow rig, I wouldn't change a thing.

Well, the ol' dually did it. Scaled out just over 18k on the trip. 1,700 miles, 234 gallons of fuel.

Some highlights of the trip:
