I have a van with a 4l80e. Recently I started hearing a groan at around 45-50mph, along with a squeak/creaking noise at very low speeds. You could hear the higher speed groan slightly worse when turning to the right. Sounded like a classic bad wheel bearing.
I checked the front and couldn't find any obvious play or issues. Considered tire cupping but the tires are fairly new and I don't see an issue there either.
Today I checked the rear and still couldn't determine any axle issues. I lifted the wheel and put the van in neutral so I could spin it. When I did I heard the creaking noise and found that it was coming from the transmission. I was expecting a bad pinion bearing. Maybe that is also bad and this is an issue on top of this, but I've never heard a transmission make this noise.
I know the pan is leaking. I always check the fluid and it's never dropped to any unacceptable level so I don't believe it overheated or ran low. It has always and still does shift and drive fine, but something is obviously wrong and I don't want to leave it for it to get worse.
Any insight is appreciated.
