What keeps the cable on the trans linkage pin? Mine piped off on the farm pulling the tractor out of the field and doesn't want to stay connected now.

Going to guess yours is 1995-up since you didn't post the year, dunno why people never mention their year.
The black plastic end has a little plastic barrel inside it that snaps on around the stud on the linkage. Over time this plastic gets very brittle; even carefully removing it can shatter it. You'll need a new shifter cable.
