1998 Chevy k 1500 OBD-2 link error

I need to read a code on my 1998 Chevy K 1500 with 5.7, so I went to auto zone. They tried to use a OBD-2 scanner when they hooked it up it said "link error". Why is it not connecting to the computer. I do have a black bear tuned pcm.

Wouldn't hurt to check your fuses. I forget which one the diagnostic port draws power from but if you have any that are blown that would be a good place to start.
