I have a chevrolet k2500 with a 7.4l 454 in it, immaculately kept. However, I bought it with 255k on the odometer and I want to change out this guzzling 454 when it eventually dies to a tbi 5.7l.

I know going from a 5.7 to a 7.4 is way more involved, but what barriers impede me from going to the weaker engine?

1) cost. The basic eng. 350 or better 383. Accessory mounts. Hose, coolant, AC. Electronics, wiring. Exhaust, including Cats if required. Reduced tow capacity.
2) benefit- whatever your happy with.

Might be a while before that big block dies...mine has 274,500 on it and still runs great. It uses only a quart of oil between oil changes and does not leak any coolant.I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Gotcha, gotcha. Might be cheaper to just do a 454 rebuild. Thanks. Wasn't sure how many things were compatible backwards.

Yeah, mine is rock solid as well. I suppose I'll have to see how long it kicks for.

Before more complex electronics, and designs that were specific to bigblock or smallblock this swap would have been a much more simple undertaking. Still not impossible, but have a plan and a parts list.

Got a pic of it? Sounds like a pretty nice truck.
Sorry for the late reply friend. Here it is.
Got her from someone who drove it down from Washington. Spent about 3000 bucks fixing a whole bunch of random finicky crap, but the trans and engine are solid. She's my carpenter truck.
