Hello!

Please help me out!!

I have a 1998 GMC extended cab C1500 truck (2wd) that had the 5.7l.
I just had the transmission rebuilt with HD components. It was the stock transmission I don’t know if it’s a 4l60 or 4l60E.

I am FINALLY ready (funds wise) to do an LS swap.

When all is said and done i would love nothing more than to plug and play. That being said i have NO idea how or what i need to make that happen.

So I beg you please help me out and point me in the right direction.

A) which ls engine do I buy? I’ve read that a drive by cable model is ideal vs the drive by wire, so do you I get a crate 5.3 or 6.0 that is drive by cable? Or get a low mileage junkyard engine...since i have tranny redbuilt

Next, For me the limiting reagent to this swap will be what is most compatible with the vehicle….wiring wise

Thus I’m starting this venture with you guys!!

Tell me what you think, as experts in the field ,

1) what would be easiest plug and play year/s LS motor? Do I get a dbc or dbw engine and harness? Etc.

2) Do I need just the engine, or also, the pcm and ecm and do you provide these with your engines? Do you need my factory boxes for tuning?

Again I’m really looking at starting from this for my project and it will determine the road I go.

I genuinely appreciate you help and patience in reading this, and I look forward to hearing from you

Best regards,
Leo

There’s at least 100 different ways to go about this. I’d suggest to start by buying an engine that meets your requirements and go from there.

You’ll have 10 people that will tell you it’s a waste of time and another 10 people that will argue with those people, so just get your project started and ask for help as you need it. :Big Laugh::boti:

... limiting reagent...

I think the reaction rate will be faster if you stick with an OE-style small block engine, e.g., a "Vortec" 383cid / 406cid, but swap an LS if that's what you want to do :waytogo:

If I was a betting man, I would bet you have the 4L60E in that 1998 L31 half-tonner, assuming it still has the stock transmission (which you said you had rebuilt). The other auto would be the 4L80E.

Just thinking out loud: Don't the LS engines use a different method of mounting the trans to the engine than was used in 1998? Will a 1998 4L60E bolt up to an LS? Below is supposedly a "4L60E for LS engines 2005 and earlier".

They will bolt up no problem, there is one bolt that doesn't get used.
That being said, some LS engine/transmission combos may require a spacer or different flywheel to make it work.

As stated, there are a bunch of threads here already about it, take the time and search them out.
The video series below walks it through fairly in-depth. Worth the watch.

Also worth mentioning to us your skills budget and timeline.

Are you referring to 4L60Es or 4L80s?

If 4L60E, a 2005 4L60E will NOT bolt in behind a gen1 SBC without significant adaptation. (Different pumps, input shafts, converters, flexplates, etc).

If a 4L80, then yes, you can interchange from those two years as is.

Will a 1998 4L60E bolt up to an LS?
No, unless it's an F Body transmission. Camaros and Firebirds/Trans AMs got the 300mm style LS-compatible transmissions in combo with the LS1 starting in 1998.

Dang! Well first of all thank you and everyone who has joined in this thread to help out a newcommer. I greatly appreciate it. I was hoping my rebuilt 4l60e would mate up to an LS. I'm looking at the gen3 engines and would most likely get an LM7 ot LQ9 from circa 2003-2006 but would that mate up fine? Or would I need another flex plate and spacer or is it a Sshow bc of the input spline etc?
