hear you, I've been keeping my eye out for a steppy tonneau, the only ones I seem to find are the soft ones. Should have bought a fiberglass one 20 yrs ago when they still made them. I wanted a "inside, flush mount" one. Just never had the $$$. Maybe one day I'll get some aluminum, a spool gun and build one myself.
Mine is a soft cover... I really prefer those over the hard type. Even the roll-up soft covers are getting really hard to find. The front cover rail was missing and the previous owner's mechanic just ran screws though the cover and into the front bed rail.

I had a soft vinyl one for years, had the 3 bows that went across, and a header and one at the tailgate. Then for a reason I can't remember, I took it off and it was in my parents garage for years. Then when I went to get it, the piece at the tailgate was missing. Tore that garage apart trying to find it. Just threw the rest away. It was the kind that had a plastic trim piece that folded over the frame, so it wouldn't go tight enough without that piece. Oh well.

That sounds really similar to the one I have. It has plastic pieces in the cover edges that snap into a groove in the rails. I had to cut that groove into the header piece that I made. I'm using some of the existing holes from the sheet metal screws to screw the header part down the the front bed rail. I'll try to shoot a couple pictures next time I mess with it.

Tonight a was able to get back out and finish up the tonneau cover.

Here is the header rail I made:

Here is where it mounts. Note all of the sheet metal screw holes from the previous butchery:

I forgot to take a photo of the rail mounted on the bed... oh well. Anyway, here is the cover snapped into the new rail:

Here is the truck with the cover on it. I need to let it sit out in the sun and loosen up the cover a little bit.

I also put a battery hold down in it. I bought this a few weeks ago during one of my O'Really Auto Parts (as a friend calls it) stops:

Yup I call em that too, when they don't have what I need( thankfully that's not too often though). Last time I had to go elsewhere was a couple months ago, replacing the starter on my crew cab. They didn't have any of the appropriate starter bolts, so I had to go to the Chevy dealership parts department. I was glad to find out the Chevy store was open on Saturday though!
