It makes me wonder why boomers believe that nobody could drive a stick but them. My 95 has the nv4500 and i personally prefer driving it more than my gmt800 with the 4l60e. And I'm a few gens younger than the boomers being I was born in 2001.

It's mainly a joke, You're an exception. When I took my driver's license exam in Anchorage AK (since my WI license expired), in a 74 Chevy (Isuzu) LUV truck with a 4 speed stick, the examiner had me take off up hill from a stop without rolling backwards. How many Millennials (Gen X,Y,Z or whatever) can do that today? Did they even have any lessons in driver's ed on a manual trans?

Gentlemen, quick question about an easy quick, but clever way to disconnect the starting system. My neighborhood has recently been infested with yo-yo meth-heads from a nearby homeless camp who like to break into cars to steal things inside or take the whole car. They are not sophisticated criminals whatsoever and generally have been using skeleton keys and screwdrivers to take cars. They have been stealing cats on my block as well. I have a Club on the truck, though it appears someone unsuccessfully tried to pry the door lock open last night on my truck/camper setup. It's a 1999 C2500 2Wd (see pic).

When I lived in the Bronx years ago I used to disconnect the distributer coil wire from my El Camino and take it with me, replacing it with a non-working coil wire (took out the metal wire inside). It took a minute to do and made it difficult for a thief to figure out what was wrong in only a few minutes. I'm looking for a similar tactic here as the yo-yo thieves in my neighborhood would be even less inclined to figure it out and likely wouldn't even pop the hood; they would just move on.

The problem is that the distributor on my 5.7 liter motor is way under the firewall; the motor is quite recessed towards the back. Popping the coil wire is not an easy task with this truck. I do not want to put a cutoff switch anywhere.

Anyone have an ideas? Starter relay wire? A Fuse, perhaps? Something simple, fast, and clever. But please don't write "move" or "shoot them", etc. as I've already considered and dispatched with those ideas (lol!). Thanks in advance for any and all ideas. P

I'd definitely reconsider shooting them.

Having said that all my trucks have the fuel pump ground wire on a switch.

You want something simple but don't want to install a cutoff switch of any kind? I'm confused. A cutoff switch is about the simplest effective means that will stop someone that isn't sufficiently determined to steal the truck.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that anything suggested here or on any other online forum can be read by thieves as well, making it less useful, so don't get too confident in anything you can read online. They already know pretty much every possible scenario one might imagine.

Someone earlier mentioned a dummy relay; this is simple yet I would not do it on the fuel pump relay of a Vortec truck. That socket in the convenience center is already electrically challenged. Without any owner intervention at all, these often run very hot and burn the pins and can melt the plastic around the socket. Frequent swapping of relays there will only end up causing you trouble in the long run. The starter relay would be smarter as it only sees occasional use vs. constant use like the fuel pump relay.

The ignition coil and module on a Vortec small block are easily reachable and simple to unplug either one - easier to reach than the distributor on your old El Camino. Also easy for a real thief to spot if they care to take the time.

Want something truly effective? Spend the bucks on a Ravelco. It'll take a tow truck to steal your vehicle, then. Mind you that happens too; scrappers use unlicensed tow trucks to steal older vehicles and run them across the scales, higher-end thieves steal tow trucks and snatch more valuable vehicles to chop up or VIN swap and re-sell.

Best of luck..

Ravelco product is really cool. I had something similar in my mega cab, it was a small circuit board that you plugged in and it would let you start the truck. Can’t remember the dang name of the company now.

my setup:
1. battery negative kill
2. factory hood release lever disconnected, and a new one mounted in a confidential spot.

now it's gonna take them some time to get into the engine bay.

after they've got there the truck still won't fire up because:

3. fuel pump earth wire kill in a discrete location.
