Ya I have no clue on the heads.. Guys name is Russ sowers, builds nhra motors and all kinds of dirt track stuff so I'm sure he is machining the piss out of them or something that the 307 heads work better for but like I said, no clue! Lol That's just the combo he told me he uses...

All the mods you do to a 305 will mostly benefit you up high, so will following advice from someone who builds circle track motors, all made to have the snot revved out of them.

If you want to keep the 305, then like everyone is saying, a regear would be cheapest. If you want to spend money on the motor you'll get more for less swapping in a 350.

My vote goes toward a vortec 350 out of a 96-up truck and a tbi to vortec intake. Dependent on what trans you have, It will probably not hold up to much more than that if you are rough on it. My mildly built vortec ate 4 4l65e transmissions in a year and a half. I assume it has a nv3500 in it? If that is the case, it should be reliable behind a stock vortec as long as you don't drive it like its stolen and snatch on it constantly in the mud. Would be a major power improvement over the tbi 305 and vortec 350s are cheap around here. A even cheaper route to go with this is buy a cheap carb intake for the vortec and run a tbi-carb adapter/spacer on it. IMO thats your best bang for your buck.

Whats the best plugs/wires to get for it? Not sure what the gearing in it is now, What would be the best place to look/buy for the right gearing. The engine and tranny run like a champ, she'll still git up and go, right now one of main problems is the throwout bearing is going bad, so im gunna go in search for a new clutch to, not sure what brand or from where. Thanks for the help. I will probably only have the truck for another year, so i dont really wanna be dropping a new engine in it.

As for what gearing you have now, look in your glove box at the sticker on the bottom of the door. There will be a code either GU6 (3.42) or GT4 (3.73).

running 35s yuo want like 4.56's maybe 4.88s if you want it a little snappier. best place for gears, try yukon gear, ive been hearing better and better things about G2 stuff all the time, theres a few companies you can give you what you want in the rear. if the engines fine, leave it and regear it, best advice i can give but also do a tune up. delco plugs, ive never had an issue with any MSD stuff but if you fear it then go with something in house american made as stated. theres another thread that just popped up called first modifications. go look at that for your tuneup.

Like stated above, do your full tune up on your motor. New filter, rotor and cap wires, plugs (ACdelco seems to be the best recommended) Fuel filter. Clean your TBI, could do the TBI mod as well. Changing the coils could make a difference too. If that's still not enough then you could start looking at more options, such as exhaust, free up that motor! Headers, high flow cats and a or two good mufflers can go a long way on torque. Let it breath as well, for the TBI all you need to do is turn the lid around on the breather.

If your thinking that's not enough, cause it may or may not be a huge difference, I would then start looking around for a 350 engine, could go full rebuild, might save a few bucks or buy one already built. Put some Vortec heads on it with an intake that will allow you to bolt in your TBI then you might be happy with those results.
Either way, a fully well done tune up should cost your around the 200-400 range if your do your research and find the right place to buy parts. Or you might be able to do a freshened up 350 motor for around 1000-1500$

At the end of the day, the question is ... How much money do you want to spend, Well how fast do you want to go... ?
