I submit to the collective wisdom of the group, what am I doing wrong here? When I try to tighten this pulley remover I can’t get the edges to stay around it and “grab” it, they keep spreading. Tried to use the other kind and it was starting to jack up the lip of the pulley so I took it back and got this kind.

Can't you use the holes at the next 90 ° position to bring the arms closer to center, so pulling arms are less prone to slip off.
The block base is to wide for small drive pulley.
Connect to narrow holes for smaller pulley.
Wider for like alternator pulley.
I've used the same tool, puller for 30 plus years.

There are different styles of pullers and installers for power steering pulleys.

Here's one style where the collet halves are captured by the ring so it can't slide off.

I tried one like this but instead of the rod that slides into the hole in the middle of the pulley, it had a round knob that just butted up against it.

Thanks, I did try that for a bit but had a hard time getting the screws to go in, I’ll try it again. This was at the very end of my shop time today so I just threw in the towel and made this post.

Yeah got those also, sometimes it's just what is closer to my hand at the time.
