Pretty straightforward question for y’all today. Tried to search it but couldn’t find much. Can the cruise control be kept with a carb swap or an aftermarket TBI like a Holley sniper? I’m in the middle of putting a sniper on my truck and I’d like to keep the cruise control if possible. I mean it’s still a throttle cable, and the cruise control box and cable is still there… will it work? I’ve had a few people tell me that you lose cruise control if you ditch the stock TBI for anything. Btw my truck is a 95 454 NV4500 4x4

When I was exploring doing an engine upgrade I was also curious how to retain cruise control with Sniper, Edelbrock Pro-Flo, etc. Probably not impossible, but may be challenging.

How does the cruise control actually function? Can anybody explain that to me? Obviously the speed sensor is incorporated into it, or is it? Does it use engine RPM instead? My truck is a stick shift, does that make a difference? I know that the cruise control module is in line of the main throttle cable because the cruise control makes the gas pedal move as well as the throttle.

I have an '89, and I haven't looked into it, but I believe the cruise control is controlled by engine vacuum, not the VSS. The cruise control has its own cable that attaches to the throttle arm. I just haven't tried to find a way to attach the cable to the arm yet. I'm hoping to order the throttle arm extension for my Sniper to correct the overly aggressive tip-in, and I'm hoping that adds a way to attach the cruise control.

On my 88, the cruise control gets feedback from the VSS which tells it how fast you're going. Then it pulls the throttle accordingly. It does not use engine vacuum.

So... when I ditch my ECU I'll lose the cruise? Or will it work off just the VSS?

There shouldn’t be any harm in just leaving the ECM in to keep the cruise if that’s necessary, right?
I don't think you need the ECM for cruise, I thing it wasn't until 96+ that the VSS went to the ECM which, in turn, controls the speedometer, and cruise inputs. But 95 was a weird year, YMMV.
