Based on what you've stated it's unlikely to be anything other than a blocked filter. Obviously a reasonable amount of material is required to do this, so something is definitely failing. Dropping the pan and replacing the filter may get you mobile again - until the filter is restricted again, but without knowing how long ago the filter was changed and how long it has taken to reach the point that it was restricted sufficiently to lose drive, it's a wild guess as to how long it will drive for.

The fluid looks good, but for all I know the filter might be original.

You can also just unplug the fuse to put the tranny in limp mode. But that's a great idea I wish I knew about many years ago when I couldn't get out of first without a crazy loud squealing. When I had a failed ignition switch and learned about the 4l60e electrical system was when I learned about limp mode. Bad fuse, disconnected plug, bad wire on pin E or... failed ignition switch.

But seriously, pulling the tranny fuse may get you home one day. I now have a stage 3 HD 4l60e in my burb after trashing 2 previously.

When my old 94 Burbs cooler line burst, who knows how long I drove it before it was trashed but I didn't notice until I couldn't back into my drive way and saw the tranny fluid line all the way down the damn street. I patched up the line with some hydraulic fluid line and filled it back up with fluid. It would almost drive and I thought everything was fine, 100 yards down the road and stops moving. Just like yours. Its prolly smoked.

The best way to know if it’s the pump or not is to take one of the cooler lines off and see if it sprays any fluid while its idling if nothing comes out then the pump is shot in it

I just dropped the pan and was surprised to find not much clutch material.

Unfortunately, there seems to to be a bit of glitter at the bottom of the pan. I've heard that this might be normal, but I'm not sure.

The filter might be original, but the pan has definitely been off (I am guilty of changing fluid without replacing the filter). My hopefully side is telling me that the filter is just clogged after 200k, and it was always slow to get into reverse. But the trans is probably pooched.

I am going to replace the filter, dump some fluid in and see what happens.

200K on a 4L60E it's already way past on borrowed time. Sure there have been some that lasted longer but most don't make it that far to begin with.

No harm in putting another filter and some fluid in it, other than your time and money. Just be ready to have it rebuilt, because it's ready..

My last 4l60e lasted 340k and the only reason it ent out is because the rear seal blew and all the fluid was lost.

I could have had it towed and fixed it, but I kept on driving for a couple of miles until I got to a gas station. I was able to fix the seal and limp it 300 miles home.

I ended up losing 3-4, and swapping in a th350.

I didn't notice this last night, but one of the shift solenoids is sort of wonky looking.

It is any cause for concern?

If this doesn't work, I have a friend with a powerglide laying around that I might temporarily stick in there so I can still drive the truck while I save the cash to get it rebuilt.

It is the same length as a 2wd 700r4/4l60e, and I have a driveshaft laying around that would make it all work.

Powerglide? LOL

Those things are used almost exclusively by drag racers nowadays, as far as thought. I'm sure you can bolt it up, but not sure how you can make it work with the electronics of a '96+, unless you have a carb? Is your truck a TBI or Vortec? Not sure how a 2-speed tranny will work for a commuter/daily driver though. Some folks don't like the TH350/TH400 because no OD. Maybe your truck is not a DD?

Can't you just swap another 4L60 from the junkyard? I see them for around $500.

How about a 4L80e if you have a Vortec? Not too difficult of a swap...

I just put the new filter in and filled it up, and everything seems normal, in fact it is actually a bit snappier than before when shifting.

I am not sure how long it will last, and I really don't want it to leave me stranded.
