I'm no help but I'm interested to hear what others have to say, my red '97 has always had this same issue but I've never done anything about it.

I wonder if you could spray some lubricant in the latch. My guess is that it's become very stiff, and will only latch around the bar if enough pressure is applied (such as slamming it).

Although I've never done it, I'm wondering if you can remove the glovebox door for easier service, then remove the latch and see what you can do with it when it's directly in front of you. Maybe soak it in penetrating oil, clean it, and then lube it? I'd guess you'd probably want to use a white lithium grease, although a lighter, more aesthetic looking lubricant may work also since it's not really in the weather like door/hood latches are.

Not sure about the latch as I never really paid attention to it when I had mine out, but the door can be removed very easily. You just open it, then push in a little on the plastic sides and pull down if I remember correctly.

Is it leaking oil? Is it throwing the dreaded glovebox code?

99% of the time it's the intake manifold gasket that causing the latch to swell up...........
This is pure misinformation. Everyone knows you need a REAL scan tool and run a compression check on the glovebox. If it doesn't hold, you'll need to check your ring gaps.

It is obvious that you guys have never worked on a glove box before. The reason that it will not latch is because it has been slammed shut. This causes the gungulator shaft to move out of sync with the slater plate and that causes a harmonic imbalance in the rotary oscillator.

But in all seriousness remove the 14? screws that hold the glove box cover to the inner black "box" and make sure that the latch mechanism is not damaged/loose. also make sure that the hoop that the latch rotates around to close the box is not bent out of shape.

Pay attention to the length of the screws as they are not all the same
