1994 original 4l60e 170k miles.

When I'm in park and neutral I get a high pitched whine from what seems like under the hood. Is something wrong with my transmission? it acts fine otherwise.

If it sounds like its coming from under the hood it could be a multitude of things. Belt, PS pump, and any number of pulleys. Are you sure that's where its coming from?

I need to investigate further but its somewhere around the front. Sounds like when a power steering pump is low on fluid but fluid is fine, it is a little squeaky when turning in parking lots.
The whine going away in gear is worry some to me. Video coming....

hmm my buddy's 4l60 had this problem. But his eventually turned into having the whine all the time (park/neutral + low speed, high speed, all gears etc), so it might not be the same problem.

for what it's worth...he changed the 2-4 servo and that shut it right up. The truck was at about 150k.

Sounds like a worn pulley that only whines when the rpm is at a certain point.

Dropping into "gear" lowers your idle below the rpm needed to cause the noise.
