Back when I had a small block, I was planning on running the 395 Cam, a set of Alex's springs, some Scorpion 1.6 rockers and upgraded to the MPFI spider and an 0411 PCM; I felt like for the cost of everything and the way that I was going to use my old Burb the 395 cam and that set up was going to be the best bang for the buck.

There are a few members on here who are running the marine cam and they speak fairly highly of it.

Its an ok mild cam...idles with a full 19" of vacuum ...I have run it in a 9.3:1 305 with headers and a stock converter and another now in my current 10:1 360 cruiser with factory exhaust manifolds and an s10 converter .........if I had it to do over I wouldnt have run the s10 converter with it - you simply dont need it in either the 305 or 350. Like I said earlier in this thread I would probably go next time with a little more cam myself like an ELGIN cam part # E1136P 260/265 .462/.470" lift 110* and the s10 converter. To characterize it while driving it - imo it is not a peaky cam at all with a noticeable powerband jump anywhere ...it just keeps building steady power all the way up and has really good off the line tq. I spend most my time cruising at 1800-2k in my driving so I dont care one bit about 5000 rpm or beyond power quite frankly . My focus on this combo was on building port velocity for torque with the small valve smaller chamber TBI heads and nothing else . According to desktop dyno it falls off a cliff running out of cam and cylinder head at around 4500-5000 much like the TPI Vette did but still has 300 ft lbs at 5k. I really dont feel it dying like Desktop Dyno shows however at those rpms . Again I didnt care about anything beyond that 4500-5000 rpm on this setup. With my undesirable 3:08 ,700R and s10 converter off the line it will light them up. With the better vortec heads supposedly 345 hp 400 tq iirc in the GM crate 350.....FWIW with my setup 10:1 3"6"0 cid , small valve (on purpose) TBI swirl port heads, air gap intake , 625 street demon carb, factory exhaust manifolds , no cat , 3" single pipe to a free flowing 7" round magnaflow chambered muffler , desktop dyno (who knows if its accurate ) puts it at ~ 297 horse at 4500 but near 406 tq REALLY EARLY. For a little vintage era discussion think about it the 1990 Chevy 454 SS had 104 more cubes and was 230 horsepower 385 foot-pounds of torque then in 1993 improvements got it to 255 horsepower 4000 rpm and 405 foot-pounds of torque 2400 .If you have ever driven a totally stock L98 TPI Vette like I owned this carbed combo feels sort of like the factory L98 TPI combo -very torquey. TPI Vette was 245 hp 4000 345 tq at 3200 rpm and those 90's L98 Vettes would scoot for what they were even though the hp was pretty dismal......I have even heard a few fellow Vette guys say for a daily driver they preferred their torquey fun L98 TPI's over the later LT1's which had more hp in the way they felt on the street. I had a brand new in box L98 cam so I ran the L98 cam vs the Ramjet cam on DD and even though the L98 cam had longer durations the Ramjet still produced more power and torque on DD / paper ..probably due to the 109 vs 117 LC more than anything else . I have never used a zz4 cam and do not know its specs so sorry I cannot really add anything there ....but just from looking at the ramjet crate engine on paper how could you beat 400 ft lb and 350 horsepower with a set of stock vortecs and crazily a cam with 19" of vacuum. Its pretty damx impressive for such a pimple of a camshaft if you are looking for hill climbing torque ... I was shocked that the 246 vs 257 degrees intake duration wouldnt equal more power out of the old TPI L98 cam if you stabbed it in a 350 vs the less duration ramjet cam - but it doesnt according to DD ...those engineers certainly matched that combo perfectly in the ramjet to get out of it what they are .......

The 395 cam is the same cam as the HT383, RV and ramjet I believe. Everyone says it's a good all around driver cam even on a stock tune/stock stall. And you can get a little more out of it with a good spring upgrade and 1.6 rockers too.
I did not even like the Ramjet cam with 1.7s. Just too small for a 350 IMO. The 395' cam was a boat cam first and recycled by GM perfprmance into their crate engines. The HT383 is nothing more than a Marine 6.3 FWIW.

The only thing the stock torque converter is good for is a boat anchor. Even a stock cam truck will run noticeably better with a S10 converter. The Impala sS guys would often knock nearly 1/2 second off their ETs with them. Combined with 3.73 gears they often knocked a full second off their times. B-car LT1 has the same cam grind and head ports as a Vortec 350. The B-car LT1 cam is advanced 5° in the Vortecs.

FWIW my Ramjet cam with 1.7 rockers and 2.02/1.60 valve milled 906s did not like the stock tune at all but did run pretty well with the loose 2,400 rpm stall stock 4L85E converter.

Again, depends on the use of the vehicle. Everyone told me my 224 cam was too small in my LS car too along with running a stock tune, until they saw nothing but tail lights.

Sure there are lots of different grinds, some demand a tune to run at all, some just need minimal tuning and some run on stock tunes. Same goes with converters, tons to choose from for all different results. Some like super loose while others dont.

At the end of the day if it's a daily driver that rarely ever gets over 4k rpms, a small cam is a great upgrade over stock. Will it stick your ass in the seat, no. Will it be noticeable over stock, yes. Everyone's intentions for their vehicle are different, thank god there are so many options available to cater to all the different tastes.

Really just trying to figure which to go with between the zz4 and the 395, basically wanting a hot daily driver that can still tow if need be.

Well said ..not everybody cares about a half second gain over 1320 feet with the a.c. on pulling a trailer with their rig lol.... again its a really small cam but serves its purpose pretty well with vortecs 350 hp / 400 tq per GM then 364 hp 412 torque per Hot rods dyno test....

https://www.hotrod.com/articles/gm-performance-parts-ramjet-350-crate-engine/

B car Lt1 cam mentioned above I believe had 260 hp 330 lb⋅ft.... 70 ft pound difference with the 395 marine cam is alot if you ask me .....

Your Ramjet cam specs are incorrect ..its 196/206 and maximum lift with 1.5:1 rocker ratio (intake/exhaust) is 431/451 and 109 lobe center ..
