First off the reverse going bad doesn't need to be a sign of the transmission going bad. It could lose 4th an then lose 3rd later.

My 89 has a 700R4 also an it lost 3rd then 4th but I would force it into gear but eventually I lost 2nd through 4th. Still has reverse an 1st.

Ended up it blew a seal between the 2nd an 3rd clutches an had to rebuild the whole thing.

Have you changed the fluid recently?

Mine did that once, while on the freeway in got over and stepped on it, it dropped down to 3rd and rpms went up but they truck actually started slowing down. I changed my transmission filter and it worked fine after that

That's probably the most common destruction on of a 700R4.... The 3/4 clutch pack is smoked. Time for a rebuild on that jewel.
