Not always true. Mine is from a rock hitting the edge of the frame and allowing salt to eat the metal away. You can tell by the area affected.
Anyways, I taped off the shield when I was using the DA to get down to bare metal. Over the windshield I used a welding blanket covered by a water soaked towel to keep the shield cool around the edges of the weld. I dont think I turned out too bad.
