I'm Awesome
My thoughts on some Ex police stuff, yes you could say they are " ridden hard " . The other side of that coin is they are serviced and maintained under severe hd service guideline. And yes all is never perfect but that is the process for warranty support.
And Mr. Kran , in no way would I ever advise or recommend or suggest installing a part that was not compatible or a suitable upgrade or replacement. That was not a blanket statement that any alternator regardless of year would be compatible. It was to show that chopping up wiring is not always the best course.
Everybody is free to make there own choices, good or bad. Good luck.
My statement was more the fact that it can be done. I prefer the alternator being controlled by a P01 or P59 PCM if the vehicle is running one. Adding two wires from the alternator to the PCM is hardly butchering a harness nor is reworking the charging system wiring that was barely adequate when it was new. The PCM contols the system voltage more accurately and does some cool stuff as well, like it can raise the idle speed 150 rpm if the PCM is having to command over 80% duty cycle on the alternators field current. PCM controlling the alternator was one of the factory benifits that GM added in 2001 when they started using the P01s in the Express vans. My battery life in the van more than doubled (its nice not having a battery croak every 18 months to 2 years) and I still have the same 200a AD244 I have had on it since 2014. The voltage is much more consistent, the windows never slow to a crawl from low voltage, lights never dim, the blower motors always blows hard, etc. PCM controlling the alternator also prevents voltage spikes on WOT downshifts.
