Can anyone recommend a tool (individual or set) that I can use to help install the rear main seal on my 350? I’ve seen people use PVC or other home-brew tools but I’m going to have to do this twice this year and I’d rather just have the right tool for the job.

Thanks!

The seal I installed in mine came with, what they called, an installer. It was just a plastic insert, to keep the inner part of the seal from getting damaged. My part of the install kit, was a 2x4 block of wood, and a hammer.

Been several months later, and no leaks.

I’ll have to see if the Felpro set comes with one. That would be easy enough to use. I’ve got a big aluminum roller that came off an assembly line that I use to put even pressure on things I have to press (or beat) in. Thanks for the reply.

I take it the rear main seal installer mentioned in this thread is for earlier 350s...

My understanding is that later 350s like the Vortec don't need a rear main installer because they have a one-piece rear main seal. Did I get that right?

NO. The one piece rear main was instituted on the 5.7 TBI engines in 1987. It was factory on 4.3,5.0, 5.7 and 7.4 engines both TBI and the Vortec engines.

Do the later Vortecs need a rear main seal installer tool? I thought I recall the seal being a part of some metal assembly so it's just an easy bolt in assembly. Like this:

They are the same as the TBI engines, you do not replace the seal housing only the seal.
